The Well and the Wisdom of Compassion

Two adventurous men ventured into the desert, well equipped with food, water, and everything necessary to face any circumstance. They were prepared against the world.

Looking to the right, one of them saw a solitary figure. A man sat meditating, almost naked, motionless under the burning sun.

The first traveler nudged the second and whispered:

“Look at that man. He’s alone there, meditating. How can he survive with nothing? He has no water or protection, only his mind.”

The second traveler was about to suggest sharing some of their provisions when the first, with a harsher voice, stopped him:

“No, no—don’t give anything to anyone, especially not to him. He’s meditating in the desert and surely knows what he’s doing. We must not share our food or water. No.”

The second adventurer shrugged, accepting the logic of fear. “You’re right, indeed. Let’s go.”

They had barely walked a few steps when the yogi—or meditator—approached them with something in his hands and said:

 I am here meditating on Buddha, and I would like to share with you this fresh water I found in a hidden spring, and these foods that will be more than enough for me. If you wish, I can share them with you.”

The travelers went on, their faces tight with discomfort, astonished and ashamed of their own meanness. The revelation of the yogi’s abundance tormented them.

Then one of them stopped, and the other turned back to look at the ascetic.One of the travelers said:

“Please, tell us—how is it that, being so poor and with so little, you offer us all your food and everything you have?”

The yogi, gazing at them with eyes bright with true vibration, replied:

“Because compassion is always better than fighting against your own conscience.”

The Master’s Final Parable

It does not matter if you cross the desert without provisions,

But you will never cross a desert without compassion. 🧭
